Ad lib

Ad lib is the short form of Ad Libitum which literally means 'according to pleasure'. It is thus speaking or performing without previously preparing oneself for that. Such performance of speaking is also called ad lib performance of speech.

When it comes to music, performers exercise a kind of freedom, in instrumentation, or to vary the tempo.
