Aimé Bonpland
Aimé Bonpland (1773-1858) was a French botanist and traveller, born at Rochelle. He was companion of Alexander von Humboldt in his South American scientific explorations. He brought home a large collection of plants, thousands of species of them new to Europe. When he went out again to America, he was arrested by Dr. Francia in Paraguay as a spy, kept prisoner there for about nine years. Ultimately, he was released, and settled in the province of Corrientes, where he died. He wrote several works bearing on plants.Nearby pages
