Asylum

Asylum is a protection granted by a nation to someone who has come as a refugee after leaving his native country. Shelter or protection from danger provided to anyone needy, is also called asylum.

'Mental asylums' were institutions offering shelter and support to mentally ill people. Most of the civilizations found the term unacceptable, and therefore, this term is not in use now.
