Aubry de Montdidier

Aubry de Montdidier (d. c.1371) was a French knight and courtier of King Charles V (1338–1380). He was murdered by one Robert Macaire near Montargis in the forest of Bondy, north of Paris. The sole witness of the crime was Aubry's dog, and he became the avenger of the crime. The dog's animosity towards Macaire was so great that the king ordered a trial by combat between them. Macaire was armed with a cudgel, however, the dog won. Thereafter, Macaire confessed the crime and he was hanged.
