Babbitt

Babbitt is a dated word for a materialistic businessman, who is by and large conformist and complacent. The word is derived from George Babbitt, who was protagonist of the novel named Babbitt (1922) written by Harry Sinclair Lewis (1885 – 1951). Babbitt is a satirical novel about American culture and society that critiques the vacuity of middle class life and the social pressure toward conformity. Sinclair was awarded Nobel Prize in Literature, the decision which was by and large influenced by this novel.
