Baboo

Baboo, also Babu, is a name applied to a native Indian Hindu gentleman who has some knowledge of English. Lately, especially after independence independence of India in 1947, the name is generally applied to clerks serving with government.

Head clerks or Station House Officer (SHO) of a police station or Sub-Inspectors are named Bada Babbos. Assistant police Sub Inspectors (ASIs) are called Chhota baboos.

A child is sometimes lovingly called baboo.
