Bastion

Bastion is a projecting construction in a fortification. It is strategically built at an angle to the line of a wall from where defensive fire in several directions is possible. The term is also applied to a natural rock formation resembling such a structure. A person, institution, or a place is also called a bastion if they are strongly upholding or defending certain principles, activities, or attitudes.
