Bavieca

Bavieca, also Babieca, was the famous steed of the Cid, held sacred after the hero's death. El Cid (c. 1043 – 1099), also Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, was a Castilian knight and ruler in medieval Spain. El Cid loved Babieca, the famous warhorse known to the Christians and feared by El Cid's enemies. El Cid allegedly had requested that Babieca be buried with him in the monastery of San Pedro de Cardeña.

There was several stories about his warhorse Bavieca. One story relates that when Rodrigo came of age, his godfather, Pedro El Grande, who was a monk at a Carthusian monastery offered him a gift of his pick from an Andalusian herd. El Cid picked a horse that his godfather thought was a weak, poor choice, causing the monk to exclaim "Babieca!" (stupid!). Hence, it became the name of El Cid's horse. Nevertheless, another legend relates that King Sancho has given the horse to El Cid, when his one of his knight wished to challenge him, which suggest that the horse was brought up in royal stable of Seville and highly trained. It was a horse from the Babia region in León, Spain, from which the horse derived its name. Carmen Campidoctoris in his poem says that it was a gift from "a barbarian" to El Cid, so its name could also be derived from "Barbieca", or "horse of the barbarian".
