Ehrenbreitstein

Ehrenbreitstein (i. e. broad stone of honour) is a strongly fortified town in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate, on the Rhine, opposite Coblentz (Koblenz), with which it has communication by a bridge of boats and a railway viaduct. The fortress occupies the summit of the rock, which is precipitous. It is about 500 ft. high, and has large garrison accommodation. It occupies the position of an earlier fortress destroyed by the French in 1801. It was built as the backbone of the regional fortification system, Festung Koblenz, by Prussia between 1817 and 1828.
