Lesbos

Lesbos, the modern name Mytilene, is a mountainous Greek island in the northeastern Aegean Sea. The largest on the Asia Minor coast, it is located at 10 miles off shore and 20 miles North of the Gulf of Symrna. It has a delightful climate, disturbed by earthquakes, fertile soil, and produces fine olive-oil. In ancient Greek days it was a cradle of literature, the home of Sappho, and famous for its wine. Came under Turkish rule in 1462, when Ottomans conquered it. Ottomans ruled the island until the First Balkan War in 1912, when it became part of the Kingdom of Greece. Its population is mostly Greek.
