Ross Island
Ross Island is one of the many islands of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a Union Territory of India. It is located in the South Andaman district. Port Blair is the main city of this island which is also the headquarters of the district and the Union Territory.Facing the Port Blair harbour, Ross Island is a historical island in the sense that it was once the seat of British power and capital of these islands before India became an independent country. During the British Raj, Chief Commissioner's residence was located here. It is all ruins now. Old structures have almost turned in debris. The archaeological ruins of the British establishments is still an attraction and curiosity. There is a small museum in Port Blair named 'Smritika' where one can see some rare photographs and other antiques of bygone days.
The island has another attraction in the form of wildlife. Spotted deer and peacocks are in abundance. Everyday, light and sound show is organised in the evening. Regular boat service is available from here for Phoenix Bay Jetty.
