Sebastian Cabot

Sebastian Cabot (1474-1557) was an Italian explorer, the son of John Cabot, born either in Venice or Bristol. He accompanied his father to North America. He sought service as a navigator, first in Spain then in England, but failed. Then, he returned to Spain. He attempted under Charles V to plant colonies in Brazil with no success, for which he was imprisoned and banished. He was the first to notice the variation of the magnetic needle, and to open up to England trade with Russia.
