Sir John Herschel
Sir John Herschel (1790-1871), full name John Frederick William Herschel, was an English astronomer, only son of Sir William Herschel (1738 – 1822). He prosecuted with great diligence and success the same researches as his father. He spent four years at the Cape, and added much to our knowledge of the stars and meteorology. He contributed a "Preliminary Discourse on the Study of Natural Philosophy" to Lardner's "Cyclopædia," and an excellent "Treatise on Astronomy," afterwards extended.Nearby pages
