St Thomas
St Thomas is one of the Virgin Islands, 37 miles East of Porto Rico. It is the chief island of the U.S. Virgin Islands, in the eastern Caribbean Sea. It was colonized first by the Dutch in 1657 and then by the Danish in 1666. In 1754/55 it was acquired by Denmark. In 1801 and again in 1807–15 it came under British, but it was afterward restored to Denmark. In 1867, the United States bought it. Since the abolition of slavery its prosperous sugar trade had entirely departed. It capital city is St. Thomas.Nearby pages
