St John

St John is a town in Canada, embracing the adjacent town of Portland, one of the chief commercial cities of New Brunswick, on the estuary of St. John River, 277 miles North-West of Halifax. It has an excellent harbour. Shipbuilding, fishing, and timber exporting have been the chief industries. It has a great variety of prosperous manufactures, such as machine and iron works, cotton and woollen factories, &c. It has been going a good trade with the West Indies.
