Wilhelm Martin Leberecht de Wette

Wilhelm Martin Leberecht de Wette (1780-1849) was a German theologian, born near Weimar. He studied at Jena. He became professor of Theology ultimately at Basel. He was held in high repute as a biblical critic and exegete. He contributed largely to theological literature. He was counted a rationalist by the orthodox, and a mystic by the rationalists. His chief works include "A Critical Introduction to the Bible" and a "Manual to the New Testament".
