Würzburg
Würzburg is a city in Germany in Bavaria in a valley of the Main, 70 miles South-East of Frankfort. Its principal buildings are the Royal or Episcopal Palace, the cathedral, and the university, with the Julius Hospital, called after its founder, Bishop Julius, who was also founder of the university, which is attended by hundreds of students, and has a very big library. Even in the beginning of 20th century it had about 100,000 volumes. At the last census before the Bombing of Würzburg in World War II, the total number of volumes was 462,000. It had been reported that 80 per cent of holdings were destroyed at that time. Nevertheless, the library even now has millions of books and periodicals in printed and digital format. The fortress of Marienberg, overlooking the city, was till 1720 the episcopal palace.Nearby pages
