As per the results, the ruling Liberal Party got 168 seats as against 144 seats by the Conservative Party. The BQ got 23 seats while the NDP which had 24 seats in the last parliament got only seven seats. The Greens only one seat. The Liberal Party is short of majority by four seats in the house of 343 members. It is comfortably placed to form the new government under the present PM Mark Carney.
The change of leadership from Justine Trudeau to Mark Carney in March this year improved the fortunes of the Liberal Party which was trailing behind the Conservatives all through last year till the taking over of Carney. The earlier Prime Minister Trudeau’s popularity was sagging against conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, who was riding high. But the anti-Canada statements of Trump even during elections helped the liberals as nationalism, patriotism and the spirit to stand united against a mighty United States and its maverick leader fuelled the wave and sentiment in the elections that enabled the Liberals to retain power.
Carney is a relative political newcomer, having replaced Justin Trudeau as leader of the Liberals only in March this year. It must be said to the credit of Trudeau that as long as he was in power he stood up magnificently to the mighty Trump and opposed the US tariffs and rebutted all criticisms of its country of being a route for smuggling Fentanyl into the US as also human trafficking.
Not only did Trudeau regain much of his lost popularity and prestige but built a solid base for his successor, a relative newcomer and a bureaucrat finance man, to lead the party successfully at the hustings riding on the wave of popular sentiments and a sense of nationalism to keep Canada and its citizens united against an oppressive US in their perspective.
So, what happens next? How will Canada’s relationship shape up with the US, India with whom its ties were strained during Justin Trudeau's time? Will Mike Carney patch up with India and negotiate with the US on tariffs as Trump has mellowed down and seems to be in a mood of reconciliation with China, Canada, Mexico and others. As the people's sentiments are turning the tide against Trump following rising prices of essentials – eggs, a staple diet from 2$ to 9$ - gas prices up, groceries up, nearly 60% of the American feels Trump has got his Economics wrong.
One of the priorities of the newly elected Prime Minister Mark Carney is to navigate the relationship with US President Donald Trump. When both spoke in late March, Carney and Trump agreed they would begin negotiations about a new economic and security relationship right after the election. When Parliament returns, it's possible the Liberal Party quickly introduce legislation focused on securing Canada's economy in the face of US tariff headwinds.
The new government also will focus on the June G7 summit, which Canada is hosting in Alberta. Canada is sure to invite India to the G7 summit as it has to iron out differences with the latter over perceived threats and reports of Indian external intelligence having killed a Canadian Sikh citizen, which led to deterioration in relations between the two countries last year..
India has opposed the Khalistan Liberation movement in Canada promoted by the Khalistan Tiger Force as a separatist movement disrupting peace and the harmony of the state of Punjab which is now being ruled by the opposition Aam Aadmi Party led by the Chief Minister Balwant Mann. The NDP gave support to the Trudeau government earlier and influenced some of the policies against India. With Carney as PM, Indian Prime Minister will be more comfortable in discussing India- Canada relations during the his visit to Canada. (IPA Service)
