Shivakumar, who grew up on a small farm, has earned a reputation as the "troubleshooter" for the Congress party, winning eight consecutive assembly elections. Shivakumar became known as a political troubleshooter starting in June 2002. At that time, the Congress-NCP government in Maharashtra faced serious problems. There was growing unrest among party members, and people were worried about defections that could destabilise the government led by Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh.
D.K.'s expertise in resort politics and back-channel negotiations enabled the party to tackle its most pressing challenges. He possesses strong bargaining and networking abilities to manage fragile coalitions and maintain unity among party members during critical trust votes and Rajya Sabha elections. With substantial financial resources at his disposal, he has managed logistics, legal risks, and political hurdles, often facing raids and investigations by central agencies to ensure his party's survival. Now, the kingmaker has taken on the role of king.
After months of dilly-dallying and bowing to the pressure from Shivakumar's camp, the Congress High Command reached an amicable agreement. Last October, Shivakumar's supporters insisted he should become chief minister based on a secret deal with Siddaramaiah, who held the position in 2023. They argued that, given it was midterm, the party should honour this agreement. Different factions gathered in Delhi to advocate for this demand. The High Command brought both leaders together and convinced them to refrain from discussing the matter publicly. Choosing Shivakumar was a difficult decision, as they had to determine whether to retain Siddaramaiah or replace him during his term.
Three main reasons prompted this leadership change in Karnataka: Siddaramaiah's age (he is 80), the BJP's growing power, and the existence of a secret pact made in 2023.
Shivakumar, recognised as the 'troubleshooter' for the Congress party and having won eight consecutive assembly elections, exemplifies resilience. As the party's crisis manager, he addresses challenges, resolves conflicts, and forges agreements among various factions. His adeptness in political negotiations makes him a key figure in Karnataka politics, reinforcing his reputation as a strategic leader.
Around 40 Congress MLAs from Maharashtra were flown to Bengaluru and housed at a luxury resort to prevent poaching attempts ahead of a crucial floor test. Chief Minister S.M. Krishna tasked Urban Development Minister Shivakumar with ensuring the safety of legislators at the Eagleton Resort. They stayed there for nearly a week, and on the day of the trust vote, Shivakumar personally supervised their return to Mumbai. Deshmukh's government ultimately survived.
Siddaramaiah, embodying old-world charm, dignity, and social justice, has tirelessly supported marginalised communities, inspiring pride in his legacy and strengthening the Congress Party's roots in Karnataka. Siddaramaiah reflected on his unexpected political journey, acknowledging the issue of internal factionalism.
After stepping down as the Chief Minister of Karnataka. Reflecting on his political journey, Siddharamaiah said, "I come from a village, I never dreamed that I would one day become an MLA, a minister or a Chief Minister.
The rise of power centres around Siddaramaiah's popularity may pose challenges for the new administration, as his loyalists seek influence, risking internal party divisions that could affect governance and stability.
In his comments, Shivakumar remarked that opportunities shape leaders, highlighting Siddaramaiah as a prime example of someone who has overcome challenges to become one of Karnataka's most significant political figures. As part of the compromise, Siddaramaiah is negotiating key ministerial positions for about 15 of his loyalists, alongside a cabinet role for his son, Yathindra.
The path ahead seems clear. So far, the transition of power has been smooth. Siddaramaiah proposed D.K. Shivakumar's name, which was supported by senior leader Parameshwara. While the legislative party deferred to the High Command, the observers announced Shivakumar's name, leading to his election as the CLP leader. The oath-taking ceremony is scheduled for June 3.
D.K. Shivakumar's journey is likely to remain challenging. As the newly appointed Chief Minister, Shivakumar must manage relationships with Siddaramaiah's loyal supporters within the Congress party. Siddaramaiah intends to remain actively involved in Karnataka politics. If his supporters feel sidelined, they might create an alternative power centre, posing a challenge to Shivakumar's administration, as Siddaramaiah's loyalists could seek to influence critical decisions.
Both the government and the party need to align their strategies. The assembly elections are scheduled for 2028, followed by the Lok Sabha elections in 2029. Shivakumar must guide the party and the government to ensure they are ready for the polls. (IPA Service)
